What is Public Housing?

Public Housing was established to provide decent and safe rental housing for eligible low-income families, elderly, and persons with disabilities. HUD administers federal aid to the Oneida Housing Authority (OHA) to provide decent housing for low-income residents at a rent they can afford. Our public housing program consists of (100) units at our Towers I development and (40) units at our family development H.D. Brewer Apartments.

Who is eligible?

Public housing is limited to low-income individuals and families. Eligibility is based upon the following: 1) Qualify as elderly, a person with a disability, or as a family, 2) Annual income within program limits, 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status, 4) Landlord references / criminal background checks.

What are the income limits?

For Towers I, Brewer Apartments and Section 8 Voucher: listed below is for a family size of 1:
$ 19,950.00 annual (30% Extremely Low Income)
$ 33,200.00 annual (50% Very Low Income)
$ 53,100.00 annual (80% Low Income)

How is rent determined?
Rent is based on the family’s anticipated gross annual income less deductions (i.e. child care expenses, medical, etc.). Rent is typically 30% of your gross income.
Are utilities included in my rent?
All utilities are included in the rent for Towers I. Towers II and Brewer Apartments utilities are the responsibility of the resident.
Do you allow pets?
Yes, depending upon the size and type of pet and in accordance with our Pet Policy.
Is there transportation available?
A van shuttle is provided by the Oneida Recreation Department, there is transit busing, and taxi.
What if I have a problem in my apartment?
Maintenance personnel are on duty Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00AM to 4:00PM. Residents simply call or stop by the main office to request a work order for the needed repairs. A work order is then generated in our computers and sent to the maintenance department. Most work orders are typically completed within 24 hours.
Are the buildings secure?
Entrance to Towers I and Towers II is restricted to residents with security keys. Visitors and guests must be ‘buzzed-in’ with the intercom system by the resident being visited. All apartment entrance doors are equipped with a state of the art security keycard system. In addition, surveillance cameras monitor common areas 24/7.
